Skype – Review

There aren't many web surfers who are not aware of Skype – the peer-to-peer instant message software. It is a serious competitor for Microsoft's "MSN messenger" instant message software.

The technological advantages of Skype

SkypeWhat many people don't realize is Skype's unmistakable advantages over other instant message programs, in the areas of VOiP communications and video feeds for both private and business sectors.
Yet, technically, Skype does not fit the classic VOiP structure, because instead of the traditional server-to-client VOiP model, Skype is based on the peer-to-peer technological model.
This has worked to Skype's advantage: instead of having a central server on which all communications depend, the Skype network is distributed among many nodes in a "social" pattern, allowing the network to run much more stably, and grow exponentially the Skype network consists of over 240 Million registered users.

There is a theoretical downside to the method, by which Skype uses its end-user's bandwidth to support other peers, but there hasn't really been any significant effect on any Skype user's connectivity as Skype also handles about 20,000 "supernodes" in addition to the millions of users.
In reality, Skype puts much less strain on your broadband connectivity than most VOiP providers.

But the greatest advantage of the Skype network is its simplicity: simple and free applications, easy to download and install, without creating dependencies or carrying by-applications which are difficult to filter out (did someone say "Microsoft"?).
Of course, Skype has more advanced features and applications, but any end-user can easily experience first hand the chat, audio and video features for free within 5 minutes from the moment the download starts.

VOiP Features

Skypeout and Skypein

These are the features which most resemble VOiP services. Skype allows you to receive and dial calls to traditional numbers, including mobile phones, for a fee.
The rates vary, depending on the location of the caller. The rates have undergone some changes recently, so it is advised to consult with the rate chart before using the Skypeout feature.

These features are especially useful for international calls, and in some cases an international call can cost as little as a local call. However, as Skypeout charges calls per minute, rather than per calls like some other VOiP providers, it can be more expensive, depending on the length of the call.
Of course, you can have an audio / video Skype chat for free, as long as your partner has a broadband connection and is registered to Skype.

Skype Phones

Skype also offers hardware components for the telephony services, manufactured by different companies for different usages. For example, RTX is a partner of Skype, developing corless phones and USB components for Skype, while Edge-Core handles the Skype WiFi phone.

Conclusion

The only negative VOiP aspect I can mention regarding Skype is its minimalist peer-searching feature, which enables to search only by user name, which can produce hundreds of possible results, filterable only by country.
Other than that, I recommend utilizing Skype's free features as much as possible, as many private users and businesses do every day.
In my opinion, the peer-to-peer network is preferable to the regular centralized server VOip networks. You can't argue with results: User friendly, high speed, high quality text, audio, video and file transfers, and above all –free.
