Voice Over Internet Protocol [VOIP]
"Telephones" have become the most common form of human communication.
We are on the brink of the next technological step of digitizing this form of communication:
it is called Voice Over Internet Protocol, abbreviated as VOIP. So what is this VOIP exactly and what makes it superior to normal call boxes or phones?
What is VOIP?
In simple terms, VOIP is a facility provided through internet which helps individuals and businesses make phone calls. Technically what happens is voice data or waves are transmitted from one person to another in form of packets, which are digital sound waves divided into small chinks .This improves the speed, quality and trackability of sending messages. The main feature of VOIP is a cheaper and multicalling facility.
What is the difference between the phone calls and VOIP? The subtle but crucial difference lies in the way the two of them transmit the voice: regular telephones use the high costing leased wires, and VOIP uses the high speed internet connection.
Below are the similarities between the two:
1. Both can be used to call on any number may it be national, international or local.
2. Both provide 911 services.
3. Both can be used for multiple phones.
Apart from these similarities, VOIP has few added advantages over the phone lines which include a digital quality communication on the same old instrument, a wide range of cheap and easy operational plans, and advanced features like caller’s id and call forwarding.
The advantages are also followed by some disadvantages also which are:
•Some VOIP Solution systems don't work during power cuts, and the service provider may not provide backup.
•All VOIP don’t connect directly to emergency services via 911.
•VOIP providers may or may not facilitate the directory assistance or white page listings.
